Cause Of Panic Attacks

It is extraordinary how many people will become victims of panic attacks at some stage of their lives.  Some people may only suffer one or two during their lifetime, while others will be haunted on a more frequent and regular basis.  For sufferers who have frequent panic attacks they will find that the attacks increasingly affect their lives and their quality of life degenerate exponentially.  For these patients finding the cause of panic attacks becomes essential.  However, panic attacks are unique to the patient and finding the causes of panic attacks is easier said than done.

Some families seem to have a tendency to panic attacks.  There has been much debate as to whether panic attacks can be considered a hereditary illness.  The current thinking is that panic attacks are not hereditary, but the causes of panic attacks may affect multiple members of a family.  For example, if there is a very high stress level within a family as a result of medical or financial circumstances, these increased stress and anxiety levels can cause multiple members of the family to be affected by the same situation.  This could be the explanation as to the reason that you are more likely to suffer a panic attack if a member of your family has already had one.

Sometimes the cause of panic attack disorder can be a preexisting medication condition.  Some of these culprits are heart conditions or hypoglycemia or hyperthyroidism.  Some conditions will be treated with stimulants, in these cases it is possible that the treatment of one disorder will cause a panic attack.  Although this is unfortunate it is not always avoidable.  If you can isolate the treatment which is the cause of panic attack disorder then it may be possible to isolate and replace the medication.

The brain is a very complicated organ and can be the cause of panic attacks.  There is a response call the ‘fight or flight’ response.  This is when the brain decides how we will react to a certain situation.  Research has not managed to establish why some people react in one way while others react in another way.  Eventually as the brain becomes better mapped these reactions may be explained.

If you can understand the cause of panic attacks you have a better chance of controlling the illness and reducing the levels of disruption in your life.   Equally, acknowledging that other members of your family have suffered with panic attacks if a good starting point to analyzing the common situations which may be contributing the to the cause of panic attacks.  Panic attacks can be treated very successfully using medication combined with cognitive behavioral therapy.  The important thing with dealing with panic attacks is to take positive action, do not let them fester as they are unlikely to go away without help.
